Time Bonuses!!

June 8, 2011 by

If you’re like me and not blessed with the Schleck-like genetics of weighing less than 2 pounds per inch of height (that’s about 0.9 kilos per 2.5 cm’s for our Canadian friends!), then you’re probably not one of the great climbers in the world. If you do have Sckleck-like qualities – Congratulations. Please do us a favor and keep your race jersey on!

To keep the race tactics interesting, and as most stage races do, we will have time bonuses to award during the Criterium and Circuit (or road race) stages. These bonuses will not be scored separately and will be awarded to the actual 1, 2, 3 placed riders in each group. The bonuses are:

Criterium – Lap 8

  • 1st – 20 Seconds
  • 2nd – 10 Seconds
  • 3rd – 5 Seconds

Criterium – Finish

  • 1st – 10 Seconds
  • 2nd – 6 Seconds
  • 3rd – 4 Seconds

Circuit Race – Lap 5

  • 1st – 20 Seconds
  • 2nd – 10 Seconds
  • 3rd – 5 Seconds

Circuit Race – Finish

  • 1st – 10 Seconds
  • 2nd – 6 Seconds
  • 3rd – 4 Seconds

Play your cards right and you can pull back one full minute on the mountain goats or, at the very least, feel justified in eating a dinner not consisting of saltines and water.

Schedule of Events

June 7, 2011 by

A schedule of events for Saturday and Sunday can be found here.

Please note: the start times for Flight 2 for Sunday’s Circuit race have each been pushed back 30 mintes. The start time for Group 3 (Men’s Cat 4) is now 12:30 pm, Group 4 is 12:35 pm, and Group 4 is 12:40 pm.

Thanks and keep wishing for nice weather – I think it’s working!!

72° & Sun??

June 6, 2011 by

Could it be? Last week’s race weekend forecast had me wanting to commit suicide, but just checked the revised forecast tonight and things are looking pretty nice. I’ll take 72° and sun over gloom and doom any day. We’re pulling the last-minute details together and we should be ready for a great weekend of racing – come rain or shine.

Also – the Naked Noodle will be serving Pad Thai with chicken and their Presto Pesto at dinner Saturday night. Salad and their typical selection of toppings will also be available. Great Northern Brewing has supplied us with their Going to the Sun IPA to enjoy with dinner. Additional meal tickets (beer included) can be purchased at the dinner for $6.

I will post a few clarifications (possibly a new start time for the second wave on Sunday) this week, so stay tuned. As always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me.

The Big Mountain Road Hill Climb

May 24, 2011 by

This year instead of giving an award for the time trial’s fastest man and fastest woman, we’re going to mix it up and do something that everyone has a shot at winning. Before you begin the hill climb portion of the 2011 Great Northern Stage Race please give the start line timing person your best estimate for how long it will take you to reach the Village. The male racer and female racer that picks their time by the closest margin will each receive $100 in cash!! In the event of more than one guess with the same winning margin, the names will be entered into a drawing and one winner selected at random.

Remember the Big Mountain Road hill climb is 4.85 miles long and averages 6.2% grade (or a Category 2 climb according to Map-my-ride). That’s not quite as steep as the HC climb up Mt. Baldy in last week’s Tour of California, but challenging none-the-less.

These cash prizes are being provided by our good friends at Glacier Restaurant Group . Please visit Ciao Mambo, Latitude 48, The Craggy Range, or Mckenzie River Pizza Company while you are in Whitefish and look for them at the Crit and Hill Climb stages.

Mad Men

May 24, 2011 by

In between his morning glasses of scotch, mid-morning naps, and numerous personal indiscretions, our very own Don Draper (a.k.a. Chance Cook) has designed a t-shirt to serve as this year’s goodie-bag item (click here to preview).

To help keep costs under control we will be doing a limited initial run of the shirts. We do, however, intend to give everyone that registers for either the Crit or the entire Stage race a shirt. To make sure you get your shirt on race day, please pre-register and email me (rhagler2@yahoo.com) your shirt size.

Happy Training!

In the Mix

March 21, 2011 by

At the 2010 Great Northern Stage Race the Hammer boys were definately in the mix for the Cat 1/2/3 Crit Stage and the Hammer / Sportsman riders are looking strong at group rides so far this year.

Hammer Nutrition will once again be providing race day support and  additional race goodies for the 2011 Great Northern Stage Race – possibly like the new Endurolytes Fizz. If you haven’t tried them, they’re great. They are like Endurolytes, only better.

Thanks a lot Hammer for helping to keep this, and other great cycling events going!
